Oh no she didn't

Have you ever taken something out of someone else's trash and bragged to all of your friends about it? No? Maybe you would have if this is what you picked up:
Oh yes my dear friends, those right there are lovely, heavy, brass lamps that were waiting by some trash cans for me to pick them up. They're very similar to the lamps I had gotten from the Alameda flea market. Except these were free. So was everything else out on the street last night. Ha!
It turns out that this past week was "extra trash day" in the city my parents live in. I only found this out as I was driving through the neighborhood on my way to my cousin's house. As I drove down the street I spotted those yellow and red cars that practically all the kids have had once in their life sitting out on the street by the trash cans. Someone happened to be outside so I asked if he was giving it away. He said the neighbor was. I pulled over, jumped out of my car, popped my trunk open, and ran across the street faster than you can say "I was going to buy this for Jenin from Target for $60 for her birthday coming up." I couldn't believe it. I just got something I actually really wanted and needed for free. What a friggin' high people!
When I got to my cousin's house my mom was standing by her great find. A wicker love seat in really good condition that was missing it's cushion. She had the matching chair in her car. "What else is out there!?" I thought and screamed at the same time. I left the girls with my mom and took my two cousins with me. I couldn't believe I was actually going to look through people's trash by choice and excited about it.
We started at 8 pm driving through all the streets and cul-de-sacs. Our rule was to only take what was visible and in good condition. No rummaging through the piles (that's just nasty). We kept driving up to piles saying "oh, what are they giving away?" Let me tell you, there was some competition out there. I couldn't believe how many other people were out with minivans and pick up trucks! With good reason though. We found some things that had us wishing we had a truck. There was a counter height patio set with 3 stools, a backyard swing, and trundles. Oh my goodness were there trundles. At least 10.
We felt like racoons "stealing" from the trash. We'd try to be secretive about taking the things. C'mon, it is kinda embarassing. We were laughing to hard and getting such a great workout jumping in and out of the car. We would secretly return to my cousin's house and drop off our loot before going out to fill the trunk again. My mom kept calling me on my cell to come back because she wanted me to feed Maysoon. We finally called it a night at 10. Two hours driving around within a half mile radius. Crazy. So fun, but crazy.
So what did we get? My teenage cousin scored a papasan chair in perfect condition. It just needs a cushion. My married cousin got two saddle style stools (I took one of the three we found), a bookcase, and some toys for her nieces. And me... I got:
"Vintage" cozy coupe, toy house cleaning kit (broom and mop not shown), kids chair (going to paint it).

Saddle style stool, white board (going to turn it into a chalkboard), shelf-thingy (going to paint it and put it by J's bed), those lamps!

There were a bunch of these too. Only after I got home did I realize that I actually needed two. Doh! Oh well... next time. Ha!

I also got a small dining table that I think I might cut down to use as a coffee table and a rocker that looks like this:

The caning is in perfect condition but there's a cushion on the seat instead of more caning. It seemed kind of tricky trying to figure out how to take the seat off though. Hopefully I'll figure it out.
So there you have it. I took home people's trash. Don't judge me.

  2. There is an unspoken rule in my neighbour hood by the 4 little apartment buildings.......if its beside the large recycling bins its yours for the taking...........I got a 1960 something style night stand in brand new condition that I use for my microwave stand and it looks awesome. My friend got a great set of pots because some got a new set and put the old set (mind you they looked brand new) in the box the new ones came in. We have a clothe exchange in our laundry room and at the end of the month whats not taken is donated to Value Village. One person's treasure is another person's trash !!!
